The opening line to the Bible is pretty famous. It says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This statement runs contrary to popular scientific opinion but not to science itself. The Big Bang Cosmology has shown that space, time, and matter all had a beginning and are correlated. Therefore, whatever caused space, time, and matter had to be space-less, time-less, and immaterial. That sounds a lot like the Biblical idea of God!
Initially planet earth was empty & void (1:2). The Lord created light on day 1 (1:3). The order of creation is as follows:
- Dry land and seas (1:9-10)
- Plants (1:11), celestial bodies (1:16-17)
- Sea creatures (1:21)
- Land animals (1:24)
- Mankind (1:26)
Mankind was the pinnacle of creation for they were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:18-23). This means man is inherently different than all other animals. We have the ability to choose, which is more than the ability to work from instincts. Instinctively we may want to run from danger but we can freely choose to run towards danger in the case of wanting to help a loved one. We are also moral beings. We don’t say the lion murdered the zebra; they simply killed it. Animals do not sit around and debate the morality of abortion or genocide. Since all men/women are created in God’s image that means we all have certain inalienable rights. This declares racism and sexism as wrong. It especially shows abortion to be murder (Psalms 139:13-16).
From the very beginning we have the institution of marriage (Genesis 2:24). At the foundation of the world God established the family. This was before the nation of Israel and even before the Church. Strong families build strong nations and strong churches. Jesus affirmed that what God has joined together He doesn’t want anyone to separate (Matthew 19:4-6). Therefore, divorce is against God’s original plan. Also, any other form of marriage outside of man-woman relationship is against God’s original plan. He created this scenario for the propagation of society (Gen 1:28). There is no way around it; you need a man and woman to make a baby. The man-woman relationship was also created for the stabilization of child rearing. Men and women are inherently different and create a good balance in the household. By the very nature of things those who support homosexual unions admit that either the father or mother is expendable to the raising of children.
The Entrance of Sin
God is not the ultimate cause of sin; we are to blame for that. He only created a world with the potential of sin. The choice for God was to create a universe with or without free-will. In order for God to create a world with free-will creatures He had to give them the power of opposite choice. If man was to love God then he had to have the ability to hate God. The one prohibition God gave them was to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:16-17). We could say at this point they did know good/evil propositionally. That is, they knew it was wrong to eat of that tree and right to stay away from it logically. But they did not know good/evil experientially. This is what God wanted to prevent and this is what the devil was going to attack.
The temptation can be read in Genesis 3:1-7. The devil called into question God’s Word (3:1). This has been his tactic ever since. Mankind is always asking, “has God said…?”. Notice that he actually misquoted God’s prohibition. God was not as legalistic or restrictive as satan made him out to be. Again, he still gets people today to think God is only here to restrict our freedoms. Next he slandered God’s character (3:4) by basically calling the Lord a liar. Are we willing to accept the premise that God cannot lie (Titus 1:2)? If not, then we cannot trust the Scriptures. Finally, satan attacked God’s goodness (3:5). Why does God command what he does? Is it random or flippant? Or does God have a reason that is for our good. We can see from this story it would have been better for them to obey God than disobey even if they didn’t necessarily know fully why God gave them this command. Therefore, today we need to trust that even if we don’t understand why God gave us a command we can still obey it for we trust His goodness.
