Depending on how one answer this question will determine how one lives life. It will influence what you believe about life, how you vote, your feelings on the abortion issue, the church you attend (if any), etc… Therefore, let us look at how the Christian and Non-Christian world views answer.
The Non-Christian world view says this:
Source: Chance; life is an unexplainable accident or a cosmic oops! In the grand scheme of things life is but a vapor. If time were read on an EKG we would see life as that one pulse of a heartbeat in the midst of a flatline.
Purpose: None; there is no ultimate purpose because there is no grand design. We are the accidental product of blind natural forces. And we wonder why our kids are smoking it, drinking it, injecting it, snorting it, and trying to have sex with anything that moves. We are the ones who told them they are nothing but animals—a glorified piece of clay—so they might as well follow their instincts. The mantra of today is “Whatever”.
Destiny: Death; Youth is worshipped and Age is bad. One walk down an aisle in the cosmetic dept will show products to help eliminate wrinkles, color your gray hair, restore your hair, or anything to help restore youth. That is because age is closer to death and that is something we wish to push out of our minds.
What a dismal look at the world. It is no wonder so many commit suicide, struggle with depression, look for hope yet come away empty handed. But what about the Christian view?
Christian world view:
Source: Intelligent God; there is a spiritual being—a divine mind—who spoke the world into existence ex nihilo (out of nothing). He is the unmoved mover, the first cause, the non-contingent one, who is perfect in morality, power and knowledge.
Purpose: Earth was created for man; Man was created for fellowship with God. (Genesis 1:29-30). This universe was created for us to use and cultivate into a wonderful habitat for our dwelling and joy. We were created to have intimate fellowship with the Creator God and walk in perfect harmony with Him.
Destiny: Life; Life is the original and normal state (Genesis 2:9; Revelation 22:2). Death is the dirty intruder who must be destroyed (1st Corinthians 15:25-26). God is the God of Life and we must never accept death as the normal or adequate view of reality. Unlike the non-christian world view Christianity believes that Life is on the way up not on the way out. It isn’t one pulse on the EKG but steadily beating onto eternity. You can go to the remotest parts of this planet, put your shovel in the ground, take it back to the lab and discover you have life!!! God gave us life and Jesus gives us new life in redemption.
When, if ever, is it possible for a Christian to affirm death as a normal or good thing?
